Wayne K. Sumpter, MD, MPH

Joining the AMAS clinical staff in May 2024 after 34 years as an active duty and contractor U.S. Air Force physician including 31 years as a flight surgeon with 22 years as an Aerospace Medicine specialist, Dr. Sumpter is a 1983 graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy and 1987 graduate of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine. He is board certified in Family Medicine. He received his Master of Public Health degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas followed by completion of the USAF Residency in Aerospace and Occupational Medicine. He served multiple Air Force assignments as Chief of Aerospace Medicine, twice as Aerospace Medicine Squadron Commander and multiple deployments to include Operation Provide Comfort, a Joint Special Operations Task Force, and the initial months of Operation Iraqi Freedom. He has logged over 880 hours (60 combat hours) in over 20 airframes and has a private pilots license.
